Magburaka town Library becomes White Elephant

Magburaka, June 18 (SLENA): The Tonkolili District Library which was built in 2011 by NaCSA remains a white elephant project as school children and their teachers lack the culture of reading.

This statement was made was by the Chief Librarian, Mr. Thomas Terena Turay during an interview with SLENA.

Mr. Thomas observed that since the official opening of the Library in 2011, students and their teachers hardly visited the library. “There are no enthusiastic readers in the town,” he lamented, attributing the lack of reading culture to the eleven year war which attracted some members of the public to other pastimes.

He said to combat the negative attitude library staff had been visiting schools to sensitize pupils and teachers on the significance of the library in the pursuit of education. “It yielded some result,” Mr. Turay said but noted that students would only visit the library during public exams such as the WASSE.

Speaking on the challenges, the Chief Librarian said the only source of water is from a hand dug pump while electricity is got from a small generator provided by the District Council administration.

He however pleaded with indigenes of Tonkolili to continue to assist the only library in the district in diverse ways.
