As We Celebrate Child Labor Day …

Street child Sierra Leone working in support of Children in Sierra Leone

Sierra Express Media’s Mohamed Kabbah Turay went out to gauge people’s opinion as the country celebrates its Child Labour day. He makes sense of what he heard in this running commentary.

June 12th marks the International Child Labor Day. As usual the day is commemorated every year since its declaration. The question which many Sierra Leoneans have been asking is what is awaiting the fate of many less privileged children as we see street children losing trends in the various streets of the capital Freetown.

As this day marks an important life event for the children of the world, Sierra Express Media catalogued the views of deprived children and what they make up of the day.

The reaction was quite articulate as many responded to this day as a day many rich or average income earners should reflect the memory lane down. Their future was defined by the level of concentration and exposure they opportune to have at some stage in their lives.

Many called upon the government and other private institutions to turn their operational activities into salvaging the breed of the country’s next generation where the country hopes to have its future leaders.

The condition of many street children in this country is very deplorable and heart rendering though that they’ve not got the parental care love and support they need in their lives.

Another question that was put across pointed to the fact that children across Sierra Leone are left to face the harsh conditions for their survival as many of them are raised by relatives or foster parents which does not speak good most of the times in terms of ensuring what is called meeting the child’s own best interest.

Talking to many victims who have faced the same fate, their commendations as such go a few institutions around like the Don Bosco orphanage, the Raining Season kids orphanage, the Help A Needy Child International, the Street Child–Sierra Leone project and others who have been acting as champion in restoring the losing hope to the mindsets of those children.

They also pointed to the need that if thousands of institutions such as Help A Needy Child International (HANCI), Save Our Souls (SOS), Don Bosco International, Raining Season Kid, Adonis Aboud’s Pikin Bisness, etc., were in existence the issue of street children would have being addressed more than they have already done.

Talking to former Director of (HANCI) Dr. Foday Roland Kargbo, he said the issue of street children is one that is closest to his chest as he knows the crucibles facing poor parents who cannot afford to design a better future for their children.

He said each time he sees children faced with such difficulties in their young lives he becomes compassionate about them.

He noted amongst many other reasons that he masterminded the establishment of (HANCI) purely to help change the tides and conditions of some of those deprived children in the country.

Dr. Kargbo called on all stakeholders including the government and private rich individuals to help-out these kids so that they can become the dream citizens they want to be in their various futures.

He said most children left roaming about the various streets are potential recipes to cope with violence and crime.
