Afrigas (SL) Limited – ‘Means Gas for All’ in Sierra Leone

In what management claim as a first for Sierra Leone, Afrigas (SL) Limited, who intend to become the nation’s leading bottler and seller of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), made history on May 14th this year, discharging a bulk carrier at the company’s terminal at Kissy in the East of Freetown.

Speaking at the event Afrigas’ experienced Portuguese Plant Manager, Mr. Martinho Galvao, said, ‘This is a defining moment in the history of cooking fuel in Sierra Leone. Our state-of-the-art LPG plant will place this easy to use product within reach of all Sierra Leoneans’.

‘LPG will provide Sierra Leone with a safe and portable alternate energy source’, Mr Martinho continued, ‘It will help reduce deforestation, and its clean burning properties will reduce the pollution that results from burning traditional fuels such as wood and paraffin. The use of one LPG cylinder (12kg) saves nearly 100 kg of charcoal or around 800 kg of wood and produces ZERO toxic chemicals or carbon. ’

Throughout Africa LPG is being hailed as providing a safe, affordable, convenient and cleaner cooking solution which also benefits the environment. Many families spend significant portions of their incomes on energy, mostly for cooking, and it has been reported that, if the average African family switched to LPG, each household would save 120kg of firewood per year. Some African countries have already embraced these benefits. Senegal, where the government has supported an LPG programme with the aim of cutting charcoal consumption by half, consumes 110,000 Tonnes annually.

Afrigas intends to make LPG affordable and readily available throughout Sierra Leone. The company’s plant at Kissy was commissioned in February and will supply the domestic cylinder market nationally. Its convenient location will allow LPG to be transported and used virtually anywhere, from downtown Freetown to more remote regions of the country.

Concluded Mr. Martinho, “LPG heats up quickly, burns cleanly and is safe and easy to use. Afrigas’s aim is for every household in Sierra Leone to experience these benefits”.
