IMC clears the air

The Independent Media Commission (IMC) wishes to clear the air over some misconceptions from the public on the ongoing matter between the Voice of the Handicapped FM96.2 Radio Station on one hand and the daily Standard Times Newspaper and the Citizen FM Radio Station relating to the ownership of the building occupied by FM96.2 and the alleged false declaration for the acquisition of a passport by Mr. Phillip Neville at the Immigration Department.

While the media institutions concerned may not necessarily have breached the Code of Practice at this moment, their continued use of documents relating to the alleged false Declaration by Phillip Neville for the acquisition of a passport and speculations about the ownership of the building occupied by 96.2 FM have the potential of causing tension in the industry.

Recently the IMC had to punish the three media institutions involved in the affair, when they breached the code while dealing with issues relating to the same documents.

As a further sign of our concern the IMC held a meeting on the 15th of May, 2012 with officials of the Immigration Department represented by Mr. Michael Bassie, Public Relations Manager and Abdulai Timbo, Operations manager; and NacSa’s Commissioner Saidu Conton Sesay, in which both sides briefed the IMC on the matter.

The IMC stressed at the meeting that the intervention was aimed at reducing the unnecessary tension the matter was generating within the media landscape

Officials from the Immigration Department at the meeting promised to issue a statement within 48 hours, while NacSa said it had dispatched all relevant documents to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs on the Ministry’s request.

Some of the said documents were handed to the IMC at the meeting. The IMC has also forwarded a letter to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs on May 15, 2012 urging for action to be expedited.

The IMC believes that the Government Ministries responsible for Immigration and Social Welfare must clarify the situation now and put the matter to rest.
