IMC fines daily paper and warns journalists
The Independent Media Commission (IMC) has fined the Editor of the daily New Storm newspaper the sum of Le500,000 for “failure to comply with the accuracy requirement “as provided for on page 12, section 1-3 of the Media Code of Practice, which prescribe affine not exceeding Le1,000,000.
On Monday, 14th May and Tuesday, 15th May, 2012 this newspaper carried three serialized articles with the indecent caption: “Exposing the backside of David Tam-Bayoh”, which were deemed as not only contemptuous, but a disregard for public decency. The fine should be paid within seven days effective 17th May 2012 failing which the relevant provision for non compliance with the IMC Act and Code of Practice will be enforced.
At the hearing, the Editor could not give any tangible reason for the indecent caption but only apologised to the Commission for the said publication and promised not to repeat such in the future.
A letter of apology is to be sent to Mr. Tam-Bayoh, the Commission instructed. The Commission warns Journalists to be cautious in handling stories submitted by contributors especially those from the Diaspora as they will be held responsible for any infringement of the Media Code of Practice.
