Plan Sierra Leone embraces ACC in fight against corruption
In its determination and enthusiasm to spread anti-corruption message to non- governmental organisations in the country, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Northern Regional office on Friday18th May 2012 held a customized meeting with staff of Plan-SL Bombali District.
Welcoming the ACC staff to their Makeni Office at 63 Magburaka Road, the Programme Coordinator Plan–SL, Mr. Abdulai Jalloh who chaired the meeting, expressed great delight for the visit. He maintained that Plan–SL is willing at all times to receive the ACC and therefore pledged his agency’s support to the Commission in eradicating corruption in the country.
The Programme Coordinator intimated to his audience that the ACC has a critical role to play in the development of Sierra Leone, particularly in ensuring that programmes implemented by NGOs are fully and successfully carried out by contractors.
Articulating the rationale for the engagement, Public Education Officer, Fatmata Finda Bangura, stressed that it was meant to enlist Plan-SL in the fight against corruption and educate them on the negative impacts of corruption.
Mrs. Bangura furthered that the Commission is resolved to eradicate graft in all sectors but requires the support of everybody by rejecting, resisting and reporting corruption. The Public Education Officer explained that ACC was established for the people of Sierra Leone and therefore works in their interest without fear and favour.
Educating Plan-SL staff on corruption offences in the AC Act 2008, the Regional Manager ACC North, noted that NGOs, INGOs are covered by the Act, Section 1(n) which defines a ‘public body’ making it important to address Plan staff on the work of the Commission.
Mr. Sandi emphasized that, the AC Act 2008 has (27) twenty seven corruption offences in Part IV but there are other crimes in the Act for which individuals would be indicted. The Regional Manager dilated on offences such as using influence for contracts, conflict of interest, possession of unexplained wealth, bid rigging, peddling influence, misappropriation of donor funds and property, receiving gifts for corrupt purpose and protection of public revenue and property. He entreated his audience to put the country first as it was a mark of patriotism and nationalism.
Making valuable contributions, speaker to speaker lauded the ACC for this move to educate Plan staff on the work of the Commission. They registered their total commitment to making sure that corruption is got rid of in their work places and communities.
Questions and answers session formed part of the engagement.
