Ambassador Bangali represents Minister of Justice and Attorney General
Sierra Leone’s Envoy to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, His Excellency Ambassador Andrew Gbebay Bangali (in photo) satisfactorily represented the country’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Hon. Franklyn Kargbo at the just concluded meeting of Ministers of Justice/Attorneys General on Legal Matters from 14th-15th May 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Hon. Franklyn Kargbo was unavoidably absent during the meeting which took place at the Headquarters of the African Union Commission due to prior engagements back home.
The objective of the meeting was to reflect on legal matters and instruments pertaining to the fight against impunity in the continent and the African Union has a clear and unequivocal mandate to fight impunity.
Mr. Erastus Mwencha, the Deputy Chairperson of the AU Commission in his statement said: “The African Union is unique in that it has a clear and unequivocal mandate to fight impunity.”
He also outlined the significance of the Pan African Parliament which he stated emanated from a decision by the Assembly of the Heads of State.
During the two-day meeting, the Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General examined the Draft Model National Legislation on Universal Jurisdiction which will allow African countries “to overcome the constraints in exercising the principle of universal jurisdiction”. The meeting also examined the draft Protocol on Amendments to the Protocol on the Statute of the African Court of Justice and Human and People’s Rights.
The newly elected Bureau of the meeting is composed as follows: Kenya – East Africa (Chairperson), Nigeria -West Africa, Mauritania-North Africa, Zimbabwe-Southern Africa and Gabon-Central Africa as members.
The meeting was also attended by Mr. Christopher Bockarie, Second Secretary Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Addis Ababa.
