Government should make the Adeliza Showers report public

We are heartened to say that the government’s continued silence on the Adeliza Showers report on the MAPPA/HANCI adoptions issue for which the commission of inquiry was commissioned should be made public. The report was to be processed three months ago and has attracted furious attention of the parents’ party who are foreseeing the delay to be a likely denial of right to access their children.

In the midst of controversy that has spanned so far, the alleged biological parents perceive that the NGO, Help a Needy Child International (HANCI) is actually guilty of abducting their children in their adoption scheme. The NGO on the other hand have maintained their innocence and gone further to claim that that their adoption was legal as the government signed and approved the adoption documents which enhanced the process.

On the whole both the aggrieved party – the parents, and the NGO, have a common plea here and that plea is for the government to make public the findings of the commission as the inquest concluded three months ago.

The NGO could not pursue their operations due to the fact that the report is still held within government circles.

We have seen the parents trading allegations against the NGO and the government as they recently rose to say they are not going to vote in the November polls if President Koroma fails to hand them the report or make it public. In this light we demand that the government make the report public irrespective of the fact that it may have things that might not favour the parents.

The truth they say may be a bitter pill to swallow, but give it to those who are seeking it so that this matter can be settled once and for all like the president has done recently with the Shears Moses report on political violence.
