HRCSL holds one day training for staff

Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone (HRCSL) on Friday 16th March held a one day training workshop for staff members based on gender based advocacy for the promotion of women’s rights.

According to Madam Gloria Bawoh, Women and Child Officer of the Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone, the training was in support of a project to implement the core objectives, which she said are to “strengthen the technical capacity of HRCSL staff in gender based advocacy and to support the effective mainstreaming of gender in socio cultural and human rights issues in the policies and programmes of National institutions.”

The Women and Child Officer went on to state that the training also aims at enhancing the capacity of HRCSL staff.  “Being employees of an accredited national human rights institution you need the tools required to effectively promote and protect the rights of women using international standards and best practices”, she stated.

Commenting on the reasons why more emphasis should be laid on women, even though gender refers to both men and women, Gloria Bawoh said that it is because women are considered to be the weaker sex, which makes them vulnerable at all times and in every area.

She went on to say that a human rights officer is responsible for the welfare of women and children and they should find so much happiness in championing their cause.

She said as noted by the HRCSL, all staff are expected to be able to define sex and gender and be able to distinguish them after the training.

She said they should understand the existing synergy between Gender and Women’s rights and said they should use approaches and methods that would create gender awareness that gives a clear picture of their understanding.
