Three women die after criminal delivery in Kenema

In Kenema City, at the Eastern Regional Headquarter early this month an MCH Aid Nurse Josephine Mansaray who resides at 20 Dakiya engaged in the delivering of pregnant women at her home which has resulted to the death of the three patients during labour.

Matron of the Kenema Government Hospital when talking to Sierra Express Media in a telephone interview confirmed the story of the death of the three women who went for delivery to her junior nurse but she said it was rather unfortunate for the nurse who decided to take the case single-handedly without asking for help from any other nurse. She however said though that she as the matron cannot underestimate the work of Josephine Mansaray as she is a trained and qualified nurse and she has delivered a lot of pregnant women in Kenema and its environs. She stated that even though the relatives of the victims had given their own consent on the issue but it nevertheless happened in such an ill-fated way and as such it’s the work of God.

She called on the Hospital Management to look into the issue and find an amicable solution to such a problem by stopping all junior nurses from taking these kinds of risks that often end up in such disastrous situations. Matron Steven indicated the status of Josephine is so bad that she will not be able to take interview from any journalist. She withheld the names of the victims involved into the incident on the grounds that it will not go down well with the relatives if their names are put on the paper.

She however disclosed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in collaboration with the Family Support Unit (FSU) in Kenema have seriously embarked on statement taking from certain concerned members within and out of the environs, but that they have been advised to take caution in giving out information to journalists.

A police constable attached at the FSU in Kenema, PC Smith, confirmed the death of the three women in a telephone interview. He explained that the police have taken over the matter and it is under serious investigation. Constable Smith revealed that the police have done their preliminary investigations and they have their findings but are looking forward to the reaction of the family members.
