Uman Tok: Women and the Home

The man of any house is usually considered to be the head of the home but believe me so many women are the bread winners of their homes instead of being a help mate to their partners. This actually tells how important women continue to serve in every home. This importance is not only found in the home but even in the work place as well as in religious places of worship.  (Photo: Princetta Williams, author)

Weaker Sex

Women have been erroneously regarded as the weaker vessels but real times indicate otherwise.  The fact of the matter is that some men are even weaker than their womenfolk, and this explains why some men are apt to regard women in a challenging manner.

Some men, knowing fully well that they might not be able to succeed in the face of an industrious female might refuse to give them what is their due.

This particular issue had grown so much that even when the 50- 50 campaign is being preached for gender equality among both sexes; it has been frowned upon seriously and openly discouraged.  Men have become aggressive towards the concept of the 50-50 initiative and even in pulpits and in mosques, every effort is being made tenaciously to down play the importance and positive aspect of women in our respective communities.

In offices and other places where men and women tend to work together, the same system continues and this is one serious obstacle to development especially in African countries.

Western World

The Western world has come to the realization that there can never be any development if women are left out, that is why women are outspoken in these countries while in Africa we continue to be treated as chartells notwithstanding our educational status or our financial standing.

When it comes to who deserves praises when the child grows up to be loving and admirable, the men always get the praises, but if a child turns out to be wayward,  society picks on the mother as the cause. WHY? Are men the best caretakers? Well I don’t think so because the woman spends most of her time with the children and the men only spend little or no time at all. In as much as not all women are obedient, submissive and respectful most are the pillars of their home which makes them more important in their families. In the typical African home, a mother is blamed when the girl child is impregnated even though the father has been negligent in the upbringing of the child.

Kitchen Women

The era of women being in the kitchen, sitting on the floor while the men are gulping drinks in the bar should now be a thing of the past.

The sad aspect is that women continue to serve the men folk and are actually the servants in the house instead of partners in the upkeep of the home.

The reality is that women should be seen as role models to their children, husbands and society at large.

No Competition

Note that we are not into any competition with our male counterparts but to let them know that we can do that which they can do also to the best of our ability if only we can be treated equally, with love, care and passion.
