Afsatu Kabba plants women’s tree on International Women’s Day
One of Sierra Leone’s female politicians, Afsatu Kabba, Thursday 8th planted a tree signifying women’s empowerment and inspiration in observation of International Women’s Day.
The ceremony held at the frontage of the Miata Conference Hall, Youyi Building, Freetown, saw hundreds of women sharing common ideologies on the rights of women.
The International Women’s Day celebration, according to Afsatu Kabba, reflects how women have suffered marginalization, abuse, and uneven distribution of the world’s cake.
It is against this that women all over the world carry the theme: “empowering girls and women for an inspiring future,” in this year’s celebration.
“Nationally,” Afsatu maintained, “International Women’s Day in Sierra Leone is looked at on two fronts: ‘the planting of women’s empowerment trees and a luncheon sale respectively.’”
“As UNFPA goodwill Ambassador,” she continued, “I was asked to plant the organization’s women empowerment tree, which I humbly did.”
As the tree planting ceremony ended, and soon after the commencement of the ‘luncheon sale’ service nevertheless, Afsatu, who served as ‘grand opener’ during the ceremony, was invited to uncover tables of the police, prison, FOM WASAL, etc.
Other respective female organizations including Bambara Town Women’s, National Council of Muslim Women, Amnesty International Women’s group, the Police, Military and Prison on the whole were represented.
In his measurement as he granted a press interview, the Director of Amnesty International Brima A. Sheriff said, “being the head of a human rights organization, my subordinates and I have resolved refraining from talking, but rather taking action this time around… we intend to see a society that is empowered educationally. As for our views internationally, it is, but urging that women’s rights in countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) be given them.”
The police, military and prisons were observed wearing mufflers with the inscription “International Women’s Day, Stop Violence against Girls and Women.”
It is a fact, however, that Sierra Leonean women have long asked that government equitably give them 30% quota in politics as well as public offices.
Issues dealing with the rights of women and girls also formed part of the cries of women as they memorably observed Thursday 8th.
