Restless Development – Empowering Women and Girls for an inspiring future
Restless Development staff and volunteers will be mobilising young people across Sierra Leone to participate in International Women’s Day on March 8th. Restless Development, the youth-led development agency, is organising a range of activities to celebrate this year’s theme of ‘empowering women and girls for an inspiring future,’ and to raise awareness around key gender issues.
Some of the activities planned include:
- 194 Volunteer Peer Educators (VPEs) will mobilise both in-school and out-of-school youths to undertake a march pass followed by a symposium in 97 rural communities across all 12 rural districts. The symposia will include skits, songs and performances from the young people and speeches by inspirational young and older women.
- In Makeni town, Restless Development will join forces with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs (MSWGCA) and NGO partners to undertake a symposium in the town hall focused on issues affecting women and girls. Restless Development drama interns will perform a skit and staff and young leaders will participate in the discussions.
- In Bo town, 20 young people will be mobilized to participate in a conference organised jointly with the MSWGCA that will focus on the issue of preventing teenage pregnancy. Restless Development will focus on promoting some of its key advocacy asks for government including advocacy to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for the formal incorporation of SRH and life skills lessons in to the school curriculum as well as for effective monitoring of its implementation.
- On 23rd March, Restless Development will be participating in the National Women’s Conference being organised by the MSWGCA in Freetown. Drama interns will undertake a ten minutes skit at the beginning of the conference. 20 Restless Development young female leaders will participate as conference delegates and one will be invited to present a paper outlining Restless Development’s key advocacy asks around gender to the president who is expected to attend the event.
