That APC and PMDC downplay of the peace communiqué

The peace march organized by the Gullah Kingship Association on February 28th, with the motive to have political parties leaders commit themselves to non violence before, during, and after 2012 presidential, parliamentary and local council elections, slated for November, later this year was deliberately downplayed by members of the ruling All People Congress (APC) and those of the Peoples’ Movement for Democratic Change(PMDC)  political parties.

According to the duo’s constitutions, positions like Deputy Co-coordinator for the 2012 elections and that of the National Chairman Think Thank in the PMDC never exist in both political parties’ hierarchy. This means non Executive Members of those parties are not eligible to sign on behalf of their parties.

Page Twenty One of APC’s Constitution, under the heading (Party Hierarchy) states that the National Chairman or his Deputy should have been the most appropriate authorities to sign the peace communiqué on behalf of their party rather than political adhoc committee members.

The position of Think Tank never exists in the PMDC’s constitution even though such idea was recommended in June of 2009.

Another important point to note is the PMDC’s national executive’s term of expiration limit lapsed in June of last year, 2011. That said, only the Leader, Charles Francis Margai is eligible to sign such communiqués by law.

The opposition Sierra Leone People Party (SLPP), the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) used members of their National Executives to sign on behalf their parties in the Gullah Kingship event. I think the people of Sierra Leone have the right to hold these political parties accountable for failing to meet such requirements.

My investigations reveal that the signing of the peace communiqué by political parties for non violence in the November pools was meant to seal the knot on those who may want to unleash violence during the course.  It is understood that the International Criminal Court (ICC) is going to be closely monitoring the November pools in Sierra Leone in readiness to handpick perpetrators of political violence.
