The Third Committee Concludes Work on the First Part of the 64th Session
The Third Committee of Experts of the General Assembly today (Tuesday 24th November 2009) concluded its work on the 64th Session of the General Assembly in Committee Room 1 in the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Marking the close of the session just after 1:00p.m, the Chair, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Mission of Latvia, H.E. Mr. Nomans Penke, thanked the delegates for their support, punctuality, respect for procedure and dedication among others, which he said had contributed to the successful conclusion of the 64th session’s work.
He expressed similar sentiments for the manner in which supporting staff –the sound technicians, interpreters and press release writers –cooperated with the Committee in the eight weeks of deliberations, consultations, negotiations and explanations on the issues which they have so jointly decided upon.
The Zambian Representative took the floor, stating, in a very humorous way that she had asked for the floor not to call for an amendment or to request a vote, (as she had done on behalf of the Group since her country took up the Chair) but rather to thank the Chair of the Committee and his team, for the excellent manner in which they conducted the affairs of the committee during this phase of the 64th Session. She also expressed appreciation to the Technicians and other supporting staff for their contributions to making the session a successful one.
The Missions of the United States, New Zealand, Egypt, Philippines and Cuba all expressed similar sentiments.
The highlight of the closing session came from the Missions of the United Kingdom and Egypt who both captured the events of the last eight weeks in a poem-reading act, that has now become the tradition of the Committee’s closing session.
The two poems underscored the activities in an informed, and humourous manner, using gossip techniques and light-hearted recounts that brought a round of applause from the Room from time to time.
This poem-reading act showcased the nature of the group’s work –dealing with cultural, humanitarian and human rights issues. At the end of the readings, the Cuban representative invited all missions to their December party as a way to show diversity. The Zambian representative had also invited all states to the African Party, which will be held at the Nigerian House, this December.
Altogether, the Third Committee adopted 60 resolutions and one decision, which will be presented to the President of the General Assembly at a later date, for that body’s endorsement.
Among the resolutions were the Rights of the Child, the Girl child, Right to Food, Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms while countering Terrorism, and a host of other rights. Some resolutions were country-specific and polarized the Committee with most States of the African Group, and Non-aligned Movement (NAM) and their allies leaning on one side, against Western Europe and their allies in the political and cultural divide.
