Update: Maada Bio appoints Kadie Sesay as running mate

Flagbearer of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) yesterday made a dramatic announcement on the radio airwaves with regards the hotly debated running mate issue.

Julius Maada Bio named Kadie Sesay, one of the defeated flagbearer aspirants of the SLPP, as the party’s running mate for the 2012 presidential election.

Newsmen and other stakeholders were earlier informed yesterday that Maada Bio would be formally announcing his running mate today at an occasion to be held in the north of the country, Port Loko to be precise. The announcement on the radio airwaves therefore took people by surprise, and the debate as to the merit and demerit of the appointment of Kadie Sesay is already in top gear.

Sierra Express gathered yesterday from credible sources close to the party’s hierarchy that the decision of Maada to appoint Kadie Sesay was not in consonance with the advice of a certain section of the party’s national executive, which had strongly advocated that Usman Boie Kamara be appointed as the party’s running mate because of obvious reasons. But according to sources, Maada Bio frowned at that advice and decided to appoint his favourite.

The decision of Maada Bio is seemingly the final straw that has broken the camel’s back, if the disgruntlement that was exhibited yesterday by core members of the party is anything to go by.

Several party stalwarts yesterday told this press that they were going to tender their resignation from the party in protest over the decision of Maada Bio.

Meanwhile, Maada Bio and his crew hold the view that the decision of Maada was very decisive.
