Rising Star football clinic starts in Dar es Salaam

The training session for the Airtel Rising Stars kicked off today at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.  Billy Miller, the head coach of the Airtel Rising Stars football clinic and his team in Tanzania kick-started the training Sunday morning with basic routines in dribbling, passing, and ball handling.  The coaches divided the youngsters into groups and put them through drills.  (Photo: Players and youth coaches gathered before the start of the football clinic)

Witnessing the opening day of the football clinic was Assistant Director for Sports Development at the Ministry of Information, Culture and Sports in Tanzania, Juliana Yassoda who said she was impressed with what Airtel and Manchester United were doing together in improving the state of football in Tanzania and other African countries.

She said government need support from the private sector to develop sports because the resources available and the many responsibilities of government makes it very hard for them to singlehandedly develop sports.  She referred to the ‘Airtel Rising Stars’ as a ‘stimulant’ to football in Tanzania saying it will help everyone involved in the development of football.

Observing the routines from the sideline was Tanzania’s Under 20 youth team coach, Mohamed Rishad Adolph who was very impressed with the routines and procedures he saw on the inaugural training session that he expressed hope the Rising Star initiative will continue in the next few years.  “If they continue to get these trainings – it will really be tremendous for them,” he said.

He said every youngster must go through the regular routines he saw on Sunday, “This is very crucial in the improvement of football skills, if only these kids can keep up with these trainings, we will surely be having future footballers with very good technical edge,” he concluded

Two players of the day, Hamza Kamara and Patrick Gbinda scooped an accolade as the players standing out for good attitude on the first day of training.

One of the players, Hamza Kamara from Sierra Leone said afterwards: “The training was very good and action-packed and I enjoyed every moment of it. I also feel good to land a standout and receive a small medal because today is the first day and this will surely give me inspiration to continue the good thing I have started.”
