Sierra Leone says no to breast cancer in the month long celebration

Stakeholders around the world have in unison observed the month of October 2011 as Breast Cancer Month, with a mission to raise awareness on Breast Cancer through quality education on the disease itself, teaching self – breast examinations, and encouraging clinical examination plus annual mammogram check-ups.  This can be accomplished in part by encouraging, supporting and providing assistance to the female folk worldwide, through advocacy and sensitization.

Therefore, the formation of Breast Cancer stakeholder organizations worldwide is to help with education on the dangers posed by breast cancer and to create the awareness on early detection and early health seeking behaviour, which will make a lot of difference in saving the lives of women in the world, plus ultimate reduction on diagnosis, through heightened awareness and proactiveness of women in the world.

In the last decade, Sierra Leone has been no exception in promoting Breast Cancer Awareness, a disease that was secretly killing our women folk round about the country. The intervention of stakeholder organisations formed, including the Melvina Edith Patricia Stuart (MEPS) Well Woman Clinic and the Thinking Pink Foundation who are in the forefront of addressing and promoting Breast Cancer awareness and diagnostics in our nation.

These institutions have gained significant strides in increasing the low awareness    of the deadly disease among the populace especially women in Sierra Leone. The disease therefore, should be taken very seriously by women from all works of life in the country as every woman is at a risk of Breast Cancer.

Hence the clarion calls on the public and private sectors to increase their participation in supporting Breast Cancer issues. Standard Chartered Bank is already taking the lead in ‘Saying No to Breast Cancer in Sierra Leone. Having continued its sponsorship of the Well Woman Clinic in several activities to boost breast cancer awareness including free screenings for thousands of deprived women around the country, Standard Chartered has joined the nation in the month long commemoration of raising awareness on Breast Cancer in Sierra Leone. The Bank is a valued stakeholder in the Fight against Breast Cancer and an avid supporter of the Well Woman Clinic.

Standard Chartered Bank  in support of the Breast Cancer month organised Breast Cancer Day last Friday 21st October 2011, under the auspices of the Bank’s Diversity & Inclusion Council and  activities of the memorable event included staff adorning pink apparels to work and pin up of the ‘Pink Ribbon’, to signify its resolve to saying ‘No to Breast Cancer’. The ‘Best Dressed PINK’ male and female staff of the Day was awarded with supermarket vouchers and the Bank also utilised the event to raise funds donated by staff, for onward submission to the Well Woman Clinic.
