Leone Stars did not qualify because they failed to score earlier … SLFA Technical Director
Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Technical Director says the Leone Stars did not qualify to the 2012 Nations Cup because they failed to score an early goal against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
The final Group G match which ended 0-0 was played on October 8 2011 in Nelspurit in South Africa.
Sam Obi Metzger said: “before the match the South Africans were under pressure and should Leone Stars have scored in the first half that would have completely shattered the hopes of their opponents.”
He added: “but because we did not score an early goal caused our team to come under immense pressure in the first 35 minutes of the match.”
Reflecting on Leone Stars’ last match against the Pharaohs of Egypt in Freetown on September 3rd 2011, Sam Obi Metzger pointed an early goal by Leone Stars in the first half gave the team the impetus to win the match 2-1, albeit the Egyptians were able to pull back a goal.
“Bafana Bafana playing at home were under pressure therefore had we scored against them in the first half would have completely spoil their game plan and give us the extra advantage to win the match and eventually qualify to Equatorial Guinea and Gabon,” Sam Obi Metzger concluded.
