Sierra Leone 50th Anniversary Panel Discussion and Cultural/Fashion Show

As we celebrate Sierra Leone’s 50^th Independence Anniversary, the Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) Sierra Leonean Community (SLC), comprised of several organizations, has decided to approach this milestone event in a very special way: to bring Sierra Leoneans under one umbrella.  Many useful lessons can be learnt from this type of positive union.  The SLC of DFW is Sierra Leonean organizations “speaking with one voice.”  (Photo: Panelists including Professor Dr. Alusine Jalloh)

The core objective of the SLC of DFW is to serve as an advocacy group; it is non-political, non-tribal, non-religious, non-regional, and is inclusive of all classes and genders. The SLC of DFW seeks to address the myriad challenges facing Sierra Leone.  To this end, it organized a successful panel discussion and cultural/fashion show at The University of Texas at Arlington on Saturday, September 17^th.

The theme of the Panel was “Sierra Leone, Past, Present, and Future”. The Panel reflected ethnic, regional and gender balance. The six Sierra Leonean panelists, three males and three females, came from diverse professional and regional backgrounds: Western Area, Southern Province, Northern Province and the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone.

The panelists stirred up a very healthy, honest, interesting, and fruitful discussion that culminated in deep admiration from an interactive audience. Topics including history, politics, the economy, education, and healthcare were examined by both the panel and the audience.  The goal of the panel was not only to celebrate our country’s golden jubilee, but to explore opportunities for future panel discussions that will help promote sustainable peace and development in Sierra Leone. The event brought out mutual respect, professionalism, and excellence among the enthusiastic panelists.

The cultural and fashion show exhibited Sierra Leone’s unique and rich cultural heritage.  The Gorboi performance, the youth cultural dance, and the fashion show were all very thrilling. On the whole, the event was a great achievement by a committed committee of Sierra Leonean volunteers. Many thanks go out to the Sierra Leoneans and non-Sierra Leoneans who attended this milestone occasion. Particular thanks to Dr. Alusine Jalloh, Director of The Africa Program at The University of Texas at Arlington (UT Arlington) who hosted the event on the university campus.

As a way forward, I want to assure everyone that the successful panel discussion and cultural/fashion show at UT Arlington is the beginning of a united effort to foster patriotism, love and unity among Sierra Leoneans in DFW, as well as to identify and implement development projects in Sierra Leone.  Therefore, I urge all Sierra Leoneans and friends of Sierra Leoneans in DFW to collaborate in developing Sierra Leone.
