Goalkeeper recounts dreams of Tanzania

Reservation Rovers are already out of the Airtel Rising Star Easter Province tourney, they were knocked out of the tournament by Jawi FC on a post match penalty shootout that elicited the most passionate reaction so far in the ongoing football star search programme done in collaboration with Manchester United football club in England.  (Adama says she still finds it hard to come to terms with her teams elimination)

Reservation Rovers goalkeeper, Adama Sesay put up a spirited performance to keep her team in the tournament – her acrobatic saves kept her team in the tournament. She continued her fine form in a match that ended in stalemate, though her team came under serious late pressure from Jawi FC, Adama Sesay ensured the game went into extra time by stopping the onslaught from a desperate Jawi FC side.

Most observers and fans tipped Reservation Rovers to win the match because of Adama, indeed she started well but the first penalty that she saved came with a cost.  Adama Sesay saved Jawi FC’s captain, Aminata Konneh thumping penalty shot but as she grappled to stop the ball she plunged on her stomach and fell on the ball which hurt her severely. The shootout had to be stopped for almost two minutes as Adama cried in pain before she was able to get up and continue her quest to take her team forward.

The save came at a price, Adama could no longer save her team as she struggled to recover in pain, her team lost the shootout by 4-2 and as Jawi FC players and fans celebrate she wept bitterly and was surrounded by teammates some of whom were angry with her saying she should stop the crying because it was ‘Just a game’, she responded by saying: “This means so much to me, my dream was to go as far as possible in the tournament. I wanted to go to Tanzania and practise in that Manchester United Academy, now all that hope has been ruined.”

Adama Sesay, aged 16 told journalists that she felt disappointment after she convinced her parents that this could be the defining moment in her quest to further her love for football. “They were reluctant to let me play football, they wanted me to do something else. With continuous persuasion I was able to convince them that I could achieve my dreams with football. When this ARS tournament came, I met them and told them and because of the involvement of Airtel and Manchester United they were excited as I am and encouraged me and now I feel like I have disappointed them that is why I cried more,” she revealed.

Perhaps the most consoling words she had was from her team captain, Ruth J Fatorma who told her: “We are still young and with your talents you should still have hope for the future, please take heart,” she told Adama.
