Fight-back rescues Bonthe United FC
The fight for dominance in the ongoing Airtel Rising Stars tourney in the south of Sierra Leone moved to its second day on Friday as Pat Foundation tried in vain to give the boys from Sierra Leone’s biggest island an early return ticket home. Bonthe United had a magical comeback after trailing 1-0. Forward, Mohamed Abu for Pat Foundation opened the scoring with a free kick that was seemingly flying out but struck the post and bounced into the net making it 1-0 against the boys from the Island of Bonthe.
Munda Beah who put up a good performance for Bonthe got the equaliser 12 minutes after dribbling from the left and lobbing beyond an out-of position Pat Foundation keeper, Sallu Sowa.
Sulaiman Kemoh got the winning goal for Bonthe after he struck late to make it 2-1 and ensured his team remarkable comeback.
Munda Beah for Bonthe United who was voted star performer said that the victory was hard-earned: “Our team never gave up, we wanted to show our people back in the island that our trip was worth it, we just couldn’t lose like that,” he said.
In a game that promised to be a tough encounter, the tie between Edwin Michael Foundation FC and Iftoni FC was disappointment to many who flocked to watch at the Bo Coronation Ground.
The second match of Friday turned out to be largely very dull and uninteresting, until in the 2nd half when Iftoni top striker, Samuel Kailie tested the Edmund Michael Foundation keeper with a close range effort. Nothing however could turn this match up as the ARS southern region tourney entered its first penalty shootout. The only drama in the match was to be found in the unpredictable shootout that crossed the threshold of sudden death after Iftoni youngster, Kemoh Kabba ensured the shootout went into sudden death when he steadily misplaced the Edwin Michael Foundation FC keeper.
Patrick Massaquoi was Edmund Michael Foundation’s hero as he scored the winning goal with a blazing shot after Iftoni Edward Bunduka had earlier missed in the sudden death.
Star of the match, EMF Mohamed Akar said he felt happy to be selected as the star man of the match even though he missed a spot kick.
In the day’s third tie between Banta Young Strikers and Wanjama Starlet, the latter showed an immediate sense of killing the game when they dominated the match and it all started as N’pha Kamara of Wanjama took the lead early on and continued to press the subdued Banta Young Stars, but the ball was never to find the net again.
Wanjama Starlet Musa M Mansaray star of the match felt happy saying he always feels proud when he helps his teammates. “I always feel good when I contribute to the progress of my team,” he said.
In Friday’s final match, Shebro Warriors failed to put up a fighting spirit as their colleagues from the island did earlier. Makidie striker, Patrick Bindi got his double in three minutes when he scored in the 13th and 15th minutes after a barrage of pressure had seen Shebro Warriors defence shaking under pressure. Ishmael Koroma reduced the deficit for Shebro by heading in a cross from the right angle in the 29th minutes to make it 2-1 against Shebro. Makidi Stars Patrick Bindi was happy to bag two goals and a star man performance in a tournament that has seen less goals scored. Unlike Makeni, no player has been able to bag three goals so far in the ARS Bo tourney.
