The Airtel Rising Stars tournament in collaboration with Manchester United kicked off in the Northern region in Makeni on Thursday 25th August 2011.

This was after the well graced and colorful official opening ceremony on Wednesday 24th August at the Wusum Playing Field, Makeni. In total, 87 teams (boys and girls) qualified 23 teams from the Northern region.

The matches held in Makeni were to get the teams that will advance to nationals. In four days consecutively, the 23 teams (16 boys’ team and 7 girl’s team) played each other according to the match fixtures.

After the Northern Regional matches 4 teams qualified for the nationals. For the girl’s team, Suba United from Makeni and Malimba FC from Binkolo emerged victorious, and two boy’s team: Cheltenham from Kambia and Ocean Boys from Makeni came out successful out of 23 teams in the northern region.

The top goal scorer for the girls team came from Malimba FC, a no. 18 player, Isata K. Conteh, scored 5 goals for her team. In Suba United, no. 8 player, Mariatu Conteh scored 8 goals in respect of her team. Issa B. Kamara of Excel FC scored 6 goals which automatically made him the highest goal scorer for the male team.

In continuation of the tournament, Airtel will be live in Bo at the coronation field, on the 1st on to the 4th of September, and in Kenema on the 8th  to the 12th , and finally in Freetown on the 15th up to the 21st of September to get the qualifiers for the nationals. The long awaited national matches will commence on the 22nd to the 25th of September at the national stadium to get the final winners of this enviable football tournament that Airtel and Man-U has brought to Sierra Leone.
