Council awards 40 scholarships

The Port Loko District Council on Monday 22nd August, 2011 awarded forty Grant-In-Aid (GIA) scholarships to students of the Teachers’ Training College and Polytechnics in the district.

Port Loko District Council Finance Officer, Abdul Bangura disclosed to journalists that the Council awarded grants-in-aid to students in the district as part of their contribution to the sixty scholarships earmarked for one hundred students to be awarded by government.

He also revealed that the number of Teacher Training Colleges and polytechnics in the district has increased rapidly over the years underscoring, “education is the key to the development of any country. Therefore, to enhance education in the district, there is the need to award scholarships to deserving students.”

According to Mr. Bangura, indigenes of the district should be the main beneficiaries of the GIA to enable other district councils emulate their sterling example.

He admonished the beneficiaries to be studious and pass their examinations every year reminding them that council would not encourage any failure.

“We should put all hands on deck for the betterment and development of the district and the country as a whole,” he maintained.

PLDC Chief Administrator, Alfred Nabieu Samura, revealed that when he assumed office, he observed a lot of constrains encountered by parents and guardians to pay college fees for their children and assured that the District Council would continue to improve the district by initiating viable projects and awarding scholarships to deserving students.

He also highlighted challenges confronting council to improve water supply, feeder roads and community infrastructure as well as healthcare service and advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity.
