Woman tortures 8 year old child to death
Sierra Leone has been marred by a series of human right abuses as reported by local media and many times by Sierra Express. Human rights abuses like police brutality, domestic violence, rape, armed robbery have been the order of the day in the country.
In a one of the recent cases, a woman identified as Adama Koroma, residing at New England, Freetown, has been arrested after she is reported to have tortured her eight year old niece to death. The incident which occurred on Saturday 26th September at New England has been ascribed by neighbours to excessive punishment including merciless beatings carried out by Madam Adama Koroma on the child.
According to sources in the neighbourhood, the child was sent from the Provinces to Madam Adama Koroma for schooling but that since her arrival in the city, she had been constantly sent on errands, including selling water along busy streets despite her age, instead of attending any institution of learning.
Neighbours have also informed Sierra Express that Madam Koroma had always been in the habit of seriously beating the child for the slightest wrong done, including losing money while selling water.
Investigations reveal that Madam Adama woke up in the morning of 26 September and started manhandling her niece until the child became unconscious. Attempts by neighbours to stop the beating went unheeded as Madam Koroma refused to adhere to calls for restraint in her punishment of the child. The child allegedly went unconscious as a result of the beatings.
Realizing that the kid was unconscious; she immediately raised an alarm, crying out for help. Upon the advice of neighbours, Madam Koroma took the unconscious child to the Dwarzack Community Hospital for treatment where she was declared dead on arrival.
Hospital sources reveal the child was already dead before arrival in the hospital. Medical officials also inform Sierra Express Media that on examinations the child had numerous wounds, bruises, burns and beating marks.
They also claimed there was evidence that her genital was swollen.
The landlord to Adama Koroma lamented that he had repeatedly advised her to desist from beating the child and submitting her to cruel punishments but that she had refused to listen to his calls. She was always adamant in making sure that the child receives beatings, the landlord said.
Meanwhile, the corpse of the deceased has been conveyed to the Connaught Hospital mortuary by detectives from the New England police station for autopsy.
