Road traffic accident at Tonkolili
AML Freetown, August 11, 2011 (1500 GMT) – With great regret African Minerals (“AML”) confirms that a fatal motor vehicle accident has occurred in the vicinity of its Tonkolili project in Sierra Leone involving a number of persons working on the project, some of whom are currently receiving medical treatment.
The accident involved one vehicle carrying several labourers working on behalf of the local Paramount Chief, as subcontractor to a principal contractor on the Tonkolili project. The accident has resulted in three fatalities.
The full details of the incident are as yet unconfirmed and the Sierra Leonean Police are currently investigating in line with their standard procedures for road traffic incidents with the complete co-operation of AML.
However, initial findings suggest that the accident occurred as a result of excessive speed by the driver of the vehicle, who has been detained by police.
Once the official investigation is complete, AML will undertake its own internal investigation in line with the Company’s standard operating protocol.
AML would like to express its deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and offers its full support to those affected. We will provide an update once further details of the accident have been established.
