Sounding the alarm bell

Sounding the alarm bell

We have said it before and will say it again, the destiny of this nation lies in the hands of its people.  When Sierra Leone was burning following the rebel madness brutally unleashed on her by her own children, who else suffered other than her own people? (Photo: Adeyemi Paul, author)

Metaphorically speaking, the scars have not clearly disappeared from the body politic and are thinking of yet another madness ahead of the 2012 general elections, a madness that is being fermented by greedy and selfish politicians who are cleverly playing on the intelligence of our less literate brothers and sisters to achieve their devilish political ambitions.

That is why we totally agree with the position of WANEP (the West African Network for Peacebuilding) on the current political mudslinging which can only succeed in raising the political tempo unnecessarily among the populace across the country.

In its press release of August 10, 2011 while calling for a healthy political debate among politicians, WANEP took strong exception to the war of words among political parties ever since the main opposition party SLPP elected their presidential flag bearer earlier this month.

Indeed, we agree with the NGO that our peace is fragile and therefore we must handle it with great care. But, like we said before, Sierra Leoneans have not learnt any lesson from their ten-year brutal war and are behaving as if they are just coming down from the moon. This time around Sierra Leoneans will not sit idly by and allow their beautiful country to be messed up by self-centered politicians. The people have suffered for far too long. At a time like this we expect things to change for the better, as we were promised, but we are not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

That is all the reason why the ruling APC government must concentrate on the bread and butter issues and those things that will better the lives of ordinary Sierra Leoneans rather than allowing itself to be swayed off from that course.

In the meantime, government must be mindful of its inaugural promises made to the people in 2007 and endeavour to meet those promises. It is crucial that  Ernest Bai Koroma’s government succeed in his agenda for change. The people had reposed a lot of confidence in him.  He cannot be seeing reneging on those promises.

We therefore wish to admonish him to stay focused and not be distracted by the current political jamming. He has a mission to accomplish which if he fails, the people will not trust him for a second term.

And one thing he must dismiss completely from his mind, and that is, the so-called inquest. Forget about it and continue to maintain the peace.  It is worth noting that the mere mention of it after it has been rubbished by the majority Sierra Leoneans many months ago has started raising tension again in the country.

Hence, we on the side of the divide continue to plead with the powers that be to do those things that will promote our peace and ensure our progress as a nation. Keep to this plea and save our beautiful land from another round of mayhem.

That is all we ask for as a medium.

  • You can say it Mr. Editor because it was neither your father, brother, mother, sister or any relative of yours that was slaughtered in cold blood without due course of the Law. What you are saying let the aggrieved family members of those innocent souls go to hell for the have to claim to know where their loved ones were buried in a mass grave.
What I observed as A sierra Leonean is that most of you journalists are not independent in you way of reporting especially this NEWS tabloid which I have been following on line. Thank God to the democratic leader we now have in Sierra Leone. In the days of Kabba and his predecessors the time of journalism that we are now facing in Sierra leone never existed in those days.
Sierra Leoneans, we are very stupid and lazy, the only job we know is to criticize because we don’t belong but when we are giving the opportunity we are the worst humanbeings nature has ever created on earth. The success of any human animal depends on hard work therefore it is now time to focus in our individual development than just criticizing people because you don’t belong to him or out of malice. This cannot help us as a nation.
    GOD HELP MAMA SALONE.

  • I like this. It completely represent the position of all those helpless Sierra Leoneans who are caught up in this political madness. All we ask for is peace. We can’t afford to go back to those bad old days. Enough is enough.
