Sierra Leone scouts ‘missing’ from gathering in Sweden

Swedish police said Sunday they had no signs of 12 scouts from Sierre Leone who disappeared at the weekend from the World Scouting Jamboree and believed they had left the country willingly.

“We have witnesses who say they have left the country willingly … We received information that six of them were seen leaving the country by train,” said Helena Ralmark of the Skaane region police.

She told AFP it was unclear if Swedish police were still looking for the group, which disappeared overnight to Saturday, because the scout gathering had ended and everything pointed to the fact they left voluntarily.

Swedish media reported Sierre Leone had a delegation of 24 scouts at the World Scouting Jamboree, which drew some 39,200 scouts from 146 countries to Rinkaby, in southeastern Sweden.

The event ended late Saturday after 12 days during which the scouts — on average aged 14 to 17 — camped, made their own food, took part in discussions on the theme of solidarity and played music, among other activities.

Sierra Leone’s economy which remains donor-driven a decade after the end of the 1991-2001 civil war.

The West African nation ranked 158 out of 169 countries in the 2010 United Nations Human Development Index.
