Money maker in bank notes cheat
Joseph Mattia a civil servant yesterday appeared before Magistrate Johannes Wellington of Court 2 on a count charge of unlawful possession of special papers used for forgery of bank notes contrary to section 9(a) (1) of the forgery Act 1913.
It was alleged that accused Joseph Mattia Wednesday 20th July 2011 at New Site Cola Tree, Calaba Town, Freetown was found in possession of black papers wrapped in white handkerchief separately intended to resemble and pass as special papers for making bank notes.
After reading through the indictment, the accused pleaded not guilty.
His legal representative, lawyer D.R Pratt, later applied for bail but was rejected on the basis of the seriousness of the offences.
“My Lord, Lawyer Pratt said, “My client has reliable surety and would not jump bail at all.
He furthered that the accused was in the custody of the police for considerable number of years.
Responding to bail application, the prosecutor Inspector A.F. Heals objected to application of bail by the defence and cautioned that the Magistrate take cognizance of the fact the offence before his court is serious.
In his ruling, Magistrate Wellington refused bail application, stating the offence committed relates to economic crime of the state.
He said he will only consider bail after hearing the testimonies from prosecution witnesses.
The matter comes up on the 9th of this month.
