MAAll Africa Baptist Youth Conference to be held

The All African Baptist Youth Conference will be organizing a four day conference on peace and conflict resolution at the Miatta Conference center in Freetown. Six hundred delegate members from thirty eight African countries will be attending this summit. Some delegate members have already started arriving from all over Africa to attend. In this summit prominent issues ranging from leadership, conflict mitigation, security, HIV/AIDS and its related pandemic are high on the agenda. Nearly half the countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have experienced war in the past fifteen to twenty years, and in most cases, Africans have been associated with conflict and violence. This conference will take a bottom top approach in addressing the issue of conflict in Africa.

The secretary General for the Baptist Youth, Rev. Solomon E. Kambell, briefed journalists from various media houses about the background of the All Africa Baptist Youth of Sierra Leone. He intimated that the organization started its operation under the distinguished leadership of Rev. Joseph Saidu Mans in April 27 1977. Since then the organization has undertaken several activities such as the provision of medical facilities and food security for rural people. The organization has medical branches in other part of the country, including Kasere and Mambolo. The organization has been primarily funded by missions and bilateral partners. The Secretary General further said that the good news about this summit is that it is the first peace summit to be held in Africa. He also told journalists that the Baptist Mission has been in existence for over 400 years now. Last year, we celebrated the 400 years Anniversary of the All Africa Youth in the Netherlands, apart from those functions highlighted about the organization, we lay more premium on the youth as they are always vulnerable people, he added.”

Youth in what ever society they find themselves are prone to varying issues like food insecurity, floods, drought, and epidemics which often combined with conflict create complex emergencies with devastating impacts. Therefore, the All Africa Baptist Youth will be organizing a youth peace conference for Africa, and theme for this summit is “Seek Peace and Pursue It.” The summit will also be discussing strategies towards the achievement of sustainable peace for Africa. It will also channel the discussion on peace building and to imbibe the culture of non-violence in our youth.

According to the National Youth President, Rev. Sylvanus Thompson, preliminary arrangement is been put in place to welcome delegate members. So far, ten committees have been formed to arrange issues ranging from accommodation, food, stationery, transportation, and media promotion. Nonetheless, Rev. Kampbell also informed members of the press that, this summit is the first of it kind to be organized in Africa Sub-region and that it will enhance the learning of participants from various African countries as they will take the message of peace home. The president the All Africa Baptist Youth President, Rev. Brickson Sam, he intimated journalists that since his election into office three years ago they have been working relentlessly toward the success of the organization, and that the next summit will take place in Kenya, as this one in Sierra Leone will set the stage to say “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH” to the plethora of problems that face youth in Africa.
