14th November – Farmers Brace Up for National Election!
District Agricultural Officer of the Western Area Haja Adama Kamara has informed this medium that the Federation of Farmers in Sierra Leone will be holding its elections come Saturday November 14th where she said executives will be elected to serve in various capacities.
For the Western Area, she said 14 delegates have been drawn from the four farmer based organizations and have been assigned various stations they will vote in a peaceful and orderly manner.
Haja Adama Kamara intimated that the essence of the election is to have a formidable body that will join efforts with the Government in ensuring that farmers are coordinated in the proper to yield the needed result aimed at achieving food self sufficiency in the country. She said that farmers are stake holders in the president’s dream to achieve food security for the people of the country and as such, government wants to be organized and have unity of purpose to pursue.
Mark Abu Sankoh, head of Planning and Development in one of the FBOs National Farmers Cooperative Union told Sierra Express in an interview that farmers are bent on setting up a federation that is expected to support the strides made by the Ministry of Agriculture in promoting the Agricultural sector. He described the elections as timely as every grass root farmer now sees the need to come together to have one vision towards the realization of the food security dream.  This, Marke Sankoh added, will help to identify small, medium, and large scale farmers to participate in the job of making the country food self reliant. He noted that this is a wake up call to all those who see farming as a job of failure to emerge and join the band wagon to take to country to where it should rightly belong.
The Development Officer revealed that four different farmer organizations are -National Cooperative Union, National Farmers Association, Women’s Cooperative and the Agricultural Business Unit in the country/Farmers Field School.
