Pa Dembo faces stiff competition
Gambian international goal poacher, Pa Dembo Touray will now face stiff competition for the position of a starting role at Djurgården’s goal after Coach Magnus Persson captured the signature of Sierra Leonean goalkeeper of Lebanese origin Mehdi Khalil (in photo).
The Swedish Allsvenskan league side recruited Khalil on a short term deal with an option for an extension from FC Johansen of Sierra Leone.
The 21-year-old goalkeeper, who was loaned by FC Johansen to Swedish third division side Köping FF, has signed a contract with Djurgården until the end of the year when the club will have to decide whether to extend the contract to four more years.
According to the Djurgården’s manager, Magnus Persson, he spotted the young goalkeeper in a youth tournament in Ghana early last year where he was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
“He is a goalkeeper who is a bit like Andreas Isaksson in their size and in their actions. He came to Köping FF last spring and has done really well there, I have seen him several times during the spring,” said Magnus on the club’s official website.
Djurgården already has two goalies in Gambian international Pa Dembo Touray and Patrick Vaiho but has chosen to bring in another goalkeeper in the squad.
“We have decided to bring in a third goalkeeper when there are questions regarding Pa Dembo’s future at the Royal Canal (Djurgården). There is interest in Pa Dembo from other clubs,” Magnus confirmed.
Khalil’s agent, Patrick Mork believes the player is a good option for the club.
“He has a contract with Djurgården until the end of the year, and then gets the club to decide whether to extend the contract for four more years.
“A perfect solution, he is supposed to start as a second goalie, but he’s certainly a good chance this autumn to compete for first place,” Mork said. Dembo has now an uncertain future at Djurgården after his performances have been below par of recent.
