Freetown filth won’t go away easily!

It was in April this year when the Freetown City Council in collaboration with her partners including patriotic citizens of Freetown made frantic efforts to get rid of the mighty filth in this god damn city ahead of our 50th independence anniversary.

Anyone visiting Freetown at this time, especially the western part and the city centre would give a proud nod to the effort as indeed there was a seeming breakthrough in the fight against the stubbornness of a menace called filth.

However, less than three months after that mammoth task in April, the city has been bedeviled again by the almighty filth, giving the impression that all the effort was a mere cosmetic show of resilience on the part of council.

Indeed, the most despicable sight is the eastern parts of the city where mountains of garbage have become permanent eye sores, a stark indication of the downright ineptitude that now characterizes the administration of the Freetown City Council.

Of course, we have said in this medium time without number that the mayor of the city has lost ideas as to how to maintain a clean and decent city.

Instead, he has been blaming his ineptitude on the unpatriotic tendencies of certain people who according to him never inculcated any culture of maintaining a clean environment.

Beyond that, he has also attributed his predicaments to the non-payment of local taxes by city dwellers, thus making it difficult for him to accomplish his mission.

Be that as it may, the city mayor has lost the support of the tax payers because he has not been able to show tangible results in all the years he has been collecting peoples’ money in the name of tax.

He has not succeeded either in reposing confidence in the people to part with their monies for development purposes.

Even the morale among his staff, as we indicated earlier in this column, has dropped greatly. The sense of enthusiasm that once characterized the spirit of team work has fluttered rather disappointingly.

Its high time Mayor Herbert George Williams woke up from his slumber and keep our ancient city clean or else …

A word for the wise is quite sufficient!
