IBSA students bag scholarships

The Institute of Business Studies & Administration (IBSA) in collaboration with Initiative Capacity Building Association (ICBA) has awarded two scholarships to outstanding students of the Department of Accounting and Finance.

Mabel Mena and Emma Paris (beauty pageant), were offered scholarships at a ceremony held at the Institute’s Main Hall, Rawdon Street in Freetown. Giving the keynote address, the head of ICBP, Isata Harding said the scholarship awards for the two accounting students were a clear demonstration of hard work by the students, adding that such would serve as a motivating factor for others who are not opportune to be part of this year’s award.

She said their organization intends to spur students who have performed extremely well in their academic pursuit, and with the knack to initiate programmes that would develop them socially and economically. She emphasized that the idea of creating the Initiative Capacity Building Association (ICBP) was a result of the difficulties faced by students after acquiring education without employment, and that her programme is to bring students together to promote development in their various communities. She said the organization is not only looking at education and capacity building but also engaged in beauty pageants and other business, to engage the youths especially women for self reliance.

Deputy Director of IBSA, A.D Charles gave a vivid background of the establishment of the institution, noting that IBS started 11 years ago after they left university and decided to come together to provide better education for less privilege students who are unfortunate to enter university to have professional skills.

He said in 2002 the Ministry of Education Science and Technology confirmed the institution with a registration certificate of recognition, adding that the institution later registered with the Tertiary Education Council (TEC) which gave them the right and recognition to offer professional certificates.

He said the institution has produced people of substance over the years that have excelled in life and hold positions of trust in the country, and called on the beneficiaries to make good use of the scholarships and to serve as models for others in the institution.

All Political Parties Women Association (APPWA) vice president, Roselyn McCarthy said women should be seen taking part in developmental processes and initiating ideas that raise them above to hold sensitive positions in society. She urged women to take the challenge as it is time for them for to face the reality of life squarely, and maintain the standards they are yarning for in every sphere of life, adding that by doing this they should put more seriousness in their education t o stand the test of time and compete at all levels.

She expressed her happiness for the scholarship and urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the institution for providing the two scholarships.  Member of Parliament, Dr. Bernadette Lahai shared with the students’ vivid details of how she was faced with difficulties during her educational pursuit and how she was able to acquire her education through a scholarship.  She made good use of it, in the form of hard work and commitment, as a village girl up to her Master’s degree.

She cautioned the students that the scholarship is basically for them to make good use of putting extra energy and commitment to achieve in education and be useful citizens for the development of the country. She said because of the assistance she received during her educational pursuit, she decided in a very passionate pupil and students in higher institutions of learning.

“I gave 102 scholarships this year to school pupils and university students,” she stated. She admonished the students to be serious at their work, adding that knowledge is power with determination and courage to reach their ambition. The ceremony was climaxed by the award of certificates and scholarships to deserving students by the Member of Parliament, Dr. Bernadette Lahai.
