The Foundation for Democratic Initiative and Development (FDID) is bracing for this year’s International Anti-Drug Day.

It has lined up a series of programmes, including a press conference, and a procession from Victoria Park to the National Stadium.

According to the director of FDID, Mr. Hindowa Saidu, this year’s International Anti-Drug Day will be observed on the 27th June because the actual day which is 26th is a weekend day.

He disclosed that as part of FDID’s celebrations of the day, there will be a procession comprising of youth groups and students from the Western Area.

He said the message for this year’s celebration is ‘drug abuse does not only affect the individual, family, society and nation, but has also proven to be a political problem.’

He furthered that the distribution of drugs and alcohol by politicians to overzealous youths to cause them engage in political rallies is one of the plenty reasons for political violence and social unrest.

The Director also spoke on the release of a documentary which will be shown live on SLBC-TV showing national icons like Mohamed Kallon, Steady Bongo, and Emmerson Bockarie passing on anti drugs and violence messages to youth nationwide.

He said the theme for this year’s celebration is “Stand up, speak out against drugs, alcohol and violence ahead of the 2012 elections”.

The Director appealed to all the youths to desist from drug taking and violence.

He also appealed to farmers to desist from cultivating Diamba, but plant more rice and other crops to help promote the President’s food security drive.

Over the years, FDID has conducted several community visitations nationwide to preach out anti drug messages.
