Mattson: “We intend paying them their coin”
Leone Stars Head coach Lars Olof Mattson (in photo) revealed to Sierra Express Sports that his side lost many chances against the Mena Stars of Niger in the home side’s Saturday June 4 encounter in the group G stages for the 2012 Gabon/Equatorial Guinea Nations Cup qualifiers.
Mattson claimed his side outmatched the Mena Stars but was not lucky enough to score more than one goal in Freetown.
Leone Stars broke the dead luck in the 47th minute of play through Teteh Bangura’s brilliant header which skimped passed the Nigerien shot-stopper into the back of the net that separated the two sides for the full halves of the game.
The national side longed for more goals in the hustling and bustling but failed to scoop in more goals to secure a comfortable position in the qualifying zone.
Niger was a good side, Mattson said, they made use of their chances in Niamey in their 3-1 mauling of Leone Stars. “I was expecting the same reaction from my boys here to pay the Mena boys in their coin as they proved well with a good tactical display, but failed to score more goals”, Mattson states.
The Swede insists his strikers should improve their goal-scoring mentality to improve the country’s chances of qualifying for the Gabon/Equatorial Guinea 2012 Nations Cup tournament.
Sierra Leone faces Africa’s seven times Nations Cup champions, the Pharaohs of Egypt in the second leg encounter of the group G stages in the campaign at home in Freetown next month.
