SLPP captures APC stronghold

SLPP’s Parliamentary aspirant for the just concluded election at Constituency 97 revealed his party’s satisfaction over gains made at the polls.

Komba Mijiwa cheerfully told our reporter that his party (SLPP) has sent warning shots to the ruling APC consequent to votes obtained during the completed Parliamentary Bye-election in Constituency 97 in the east of Freetown.

“I was satisfied that my party (SLPP) made gains by pulling the greater part of votes in Tasso Island, Loko Town and Fullah Town areas; areas considered to be strongholds of the APC,” Mijiwa said.

He however heaped praise at one of SLPP’s top contenders for the approaching flagbearer contest, Alhaji Usman Boie Kamara, for singularly spearheading his campaign to crucial areas in the constituency.

He complained though that his loss in the elections was orchestrated by the NEC chairperson, Dr. Christiana Thorpe, who unreasonably and at the eleventh hour, allowed voters using police clearance to vote.

“It was due to her declaration that a good number of unregistered voters toe lined to vote to the favour of the APC,” Mijiwa said.

“In fact the unfortunate pronouncement by NEC was implemented only at the Baptist Kulafi School polling station, where in the conviction of the SLPP, rigging took place.”

Mijiwa says he has an encouraging result which was a big surprise to his party and that he is determined to contest again in the 2012 polls.

“I am of the strongest belief that in 2012 I will emerge as victor in Constituency 97.”
