Nursery Education Needed In Gov’t Schools
A call for nursery education to be introduced in all government schools in the country has been made by teachers in various institutions established by government. This was revealed by Madam Mariatu Kamara, deputy head teacher at Dr. S.M Broderick Municipal Primary School Junior located off Fergusson street in Freetown.
According to the deputy head teacher the lack of nursery education in government schools has contributed highly to the current down trend of Primary School Education, and this is said to be the cause of the lack of improvement and subsequent retrogression of primary school education in the country.
“Almost all the kids in government schools in Class One in particular are under the ages of seven years and such children are promoted at the end of the year almost empty headed to attend class 2 in the next academic year even though they have not been prepared,” she said.
According to a senior Teacher Mr. Lamin Mansaray, the reason why private schools are excelling is as a result of the introduction of nursery classes in the school system. “It prepares the kids for eventual entry into the mainstream primary institutions of learning,” Mr. Mansaray said.
