Sierra Leone to send Egypt out of Afcon 2012

All hopes of reaching Gabon and Equatorial Guinea Africa Cup of Nations are virtually over as the reigning champion Egypt was held to a 0-0 by the visiting Bafana Bafana of South Africa on Sunday in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations Group G qualifying match at the Military Academy Stadium in Egypt. Soccer pundits in Cairo indicated to Sierra Express Media that the Pharaohs barely troubled South Africa’s defense in a night that much was expected from the seven times champions.

With only two points from the bottom in the group, they will face Sierra Leone and Niger in the remaining matches if they can get six points from those matches who knows they might just fit in.

However that is the unthinkable considering Sierra Leone at home are also desperate in reaching the tournament after a long absence. Sierra Leone might just send the Africa Champions out for the first time in the last three tournaments.

The draw places Bafana on top of the group with eight points after four matches, requiring one win in the remaining two fixtures to ensure qualification into the Africa Cup of Nations.

South Africa will play Niger away in September and host Sierra Leone in October, while Egypt will play away in Freetown in September and host Niger in October.

  • Sierra Leone footballers over rate themselves; they talk a lot but put in dismal performance in the pitch always. If you press them they say oh! Our wages are small or the government refuses to pay out what they promised to give us. There is always an excuse for putting in poor performances it seems.
I have never seen us qualify for anything and I am going to be pessimistic to say it is also not going to be possible this time but I hope we will qualify sometime in the future. Will they prove me wrong? I doubt.
