Former Africell boss bags presidential award

Former Africell boss, Robert El-Khoury Tuesday 31st May, 2011 received a prestigious award from His Excellency the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

Reading out the citation at the ceremony and presenting the award on behalf of President Koroma, the Honourable Minister of Information and Communications, Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo, said that the award was in recognition of Mr. Khoury’s  excellent work in expanding the telecommunications sector in Sierra Leone; for promoting excellent corporate social responsibility during his tenure as CEO of Africell and for exhibiting excellent leadership at Africell by promoting the company to the status of being one of the leading GSM companies in Sierra Leone.

Responding after receiving the award, Mr. Robert Khoury said this has come as a total surprise. He said he was dedicating the award to his team of dedicated staff; without whose support and hard work his achievement would not have been possible.

He thanked his Excellency President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma for this prestigious award and said that it is something that he will cherish forever in his life.

He then thanked the Minister of Information and Communications and the government of Sierra Leone for their tremendous support to the company during his time in office, which had made all the achievements possible.

After several years working in Sierra Leone, Mr. Khoury said that he would consider the country as his second home. He said he looked forward to contributing towards the development of the country in any way he can in the future.

Mr. Robert Khoury has severed a couple times as the Chairman of the GSM Association of Sierra Leone.

People I spoke with, who have never ceased to admire the exemplary strides taken by Africell in taking up more than a fair share of its corporate social responsibility, say that this award was well deserved.

It is worth noting that Africell during this period undertook the very expensive project of refurbishing the Freetown Cotton Tree, fitting it with a fountain and dedicated power supply; the company has almost completed the reconstruction of the Makeni Clock Tower also a project of no mean magnitude.
