Togo stun Nigeria to win Wafu Nations Cup

Togo beat favourites Nigeria 3-2 to win the West African Football Union (Wafu) Cup in Abeokuta on Saturday, with Siasia suffereing his first defeat since taking over the Super Eagles.

Atakora Lalawele scored twice and set up another to steer the Hawks to the victory over the home side.

Togo raced into the lead on two minutes when Lalawele’s header beat Nigeria goalkeeper Sunday Rotimi.

The Hawks extended their lead in the 20th minute with Wome Senome finishing off a move started by Lalawele.

Bartholomew Ibenegbu then scored twice before the break to hand Nigeria a lifeline.

But Lalawele stunning free-kick deep into stoppage time sealed the victory for Togo.

The defeat ended coach Samson Siasia’s five successive wins since taking over the Super Eagles coaching post and also denied him his first trophy.

The Hawks took $25,000 for winning the tournament while second-placed Nigeria got $15,000.

Liberia finished third after beating beat Ghana 3-1 in the third-place play-off.

This year’s tournament has been a disappointment for organizers, with three nations having pulled out of the eight-team tournament.

Senegal, Mali and The Gambia were all late withdrawals.
