Now, the SLPP is behaving like a political party
We have read with great interest the press statement emanating from the monthly press briefing of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) which was held on Wednesday May 11 in the party’s Wallace Johnson Street head office in Freetown.
We say great interest, because for sometime now, the party has been embroiled in petty conflicts within it ranks, more so amongst the aspirants for the flag bearership such that not much attention was paid to national issues.
The contest for party leadership also distracted the attention of its members whose focus was only on the Chairman, John Benjamin as he struggles to retain his position in the party amidst opposition to his leadership.
Under the circumstance, there is no way the party could contribute meaningfully to any national dialogue, which is why many believed the party was only concerned about itself and not about issues affecting the collective wellbeing of the citizenry.
However, the Wednesday May 11 encounter with the media presented a second opinion about the party; this time in a more positive light.
Let it be said here that we are not so much concerned about the party’s grievances over their marginalization during the 50th independence anniversary celebration. It is a political issue all the same.
So is their proposed court action against the Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission, Madam Christiana Thorpe. That too is now within the ambit of the court. We cannot rightly comment on it.
We however wish to acknowledge, as an independent medium, that in the midst of their internal conflicts, the party would find time to address those bread and butter issues that affect the lives of ordinary Sierra Leoneans.
For how can a party that is determined to regain the love and support of the populace ignore such vital issues as the escalating cost of living resulting from the astronomical increase in the prices of essential commodities?
Indeed, it is becoming clear that the recent introduction of the metric system of measurement and the corresponding increase in the price of petroleum products have received widespread rejection. The SLPP cannot remain oblivious to the sad development.
Should it have remained silent it would have amounted to a betrayal and complete disservice to the suffering masses of this country.
Now that the party has come out so timely to associate itself with the plight of the common man and added it voice to what can obviously undermine our fragile peace is itself a step in the right direction.
That is why we say the SLLP has acted like a political party determined to win the next elections.
