Under Pole Development Unveils Stand Pipes
The Under Pole Development Organization (UPDO) on Friday unveiled three stand pipes for the Congo Town community. According to the chairman of the organization, Mr. Francis, they had realized that since water is life, they saw it as an important gesture for the community to be provided with the means of acquiring it.
On the issue of their partners in development, Mr. Francis said that descendants of the communities involved, including the Congo Town descendant organization had attracted partners in the Diaspora who are ready to work hand in hand in terms of development.
Presidents of Under Pole Youth Development Organisation, Mr. Edward Davis in his speech during the ceremony thanked everybody for witnessing what he termed, “this remarkable occasion in the Congo town community.” As part of the program of events, members of the organization were introduced to loud applause from the audience.
Secretary General of the organization Mr. James Buck, in a brief statement informed the audience that the UPDO started as a community based fellowship organisation.
In delivering the key note address, the National Organization Secretary of the APC Alhaji M.S Kargbo commended members of the UPDO “for a work well done.”
“I admire the spirit of community development put up by UPDO and I am hereby pledging to implement the same system in my own community,” he said. Alhaji Kargbo emphasized the important role water plays in any community, stating: “Before coming to grace this occasion, I must have drank some water this morning,” he said.
Mr. Kargbo also encouraged other communities to emulate the efforts being made by UPDO. “Because our youths prior to this time idly engaged in discos, variety shows and the smoking of marijuana,” he stated.
Hon. Mani Bett Priddy, a community member in his statement referred to the organization as a blend of both old and young adults. The Member of Parliament called on members of the organization to be relentless in their development drives.Â
Other personalities who made speeches include the Rev. Bishop Abu Koroma who is also an indigene of the Congo Town community to make a statement. Rev. Abu Koroma thanked the organization and consecrated the stand pipes.
Joseph Musa, the Public Relations Officer of the Guma Valley Water Company in his statement expressed his happiness in witnessing the occasion.
Mr. Musa assured community members that more street taps will be installed in due course, and revealed that government has already released funds for the installation of 132 street taps to be installed all around the city.
“These will be added to the already existing ones,” he said.
Finally, after the unveiling ceremony, pledges were made, with Mrs. Irene Kamara of State House donating five hundred thousand Leones to the organization.
Other dignitaries also made pledges.  Â
