Launching of Forum for Attitudinal and Behavioral Change

The First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone has appealed to all relevant stakeholders in the country to make sure their pupils/children adopt the concept of the Attitudinal and Behavioral Change for Schools. (Photo:  First Lady Sia Nyama Koroma)

The appeal was made on Monday 29th March 2010 at the official launching of the First Lady Attitudinal Change in Schools (FLAXIS) project, which was held at the Miatta Conference Hall, Youyi Building in Freetown.

It focuses on experience sharing and validation of text books for the promotion of education for attitudinal and behavioral change which is very important.

The First Lady, Sia Nyama Koroma, also disclosed that the children are the future of every nation, adding: “If we fail to give them the very best today we risk ruining the great future of our nation”.

Today, youths have realized their roles and responsibilities in nation building. Programs are being created by young people around the world to develop themselves and their communities which have caused a lot of impact towards Global Development.

A youth serving organization in Sierra Leone has seen it very important to take a venture by launching a youth discussion forum this MAY 27th 2011, titled ISSL Council Forum for Attitudinal and Behavioral Change (FABC).

Forum for Attitudinal and Behavioral Change is a structured event to give youths/school children an opportunity to express their ideas, opinions, and needs, to decision makers, community staff, or peers, through a youth forum discussion program designed to connect thousands of young people around communities to discuss humanitarian issues and decision-making; founded by Inter Secondary Schools Leadership Council.

Our aim is to develop good attitude and behavior in school going children and youths, and increase the amount of youth participation in discussion and decision making processes.

This forum will encourage youths to discuss problems affecting their societies (unemployment, prostitution), advertize their own projects and initiatives, post comments and suggestions, get project ideas, and create a network of friendship and collaboration with other youth leaders within the society.

As youths, we have identified that discussion is the best and common means which we believe our voice will be heard and will help facilitate greater collaboration among youth activities in the country.

Forum for Attitudinal and Behavioral Change will encourage young people in Sierra Leone to discuss and debate on global issues (epidemics, climate change).  The forum will also create the opportunities for youths to become mentors (big brother/sister) in their various communities.

This vision is not based on our own idle daydreams. For the past 10-15 years, through an international education network called New Horizons for Learning, we as young people have been seeking out the most effective ways in helping people to learn at all ages and improve at all levels. The forum will enable young people to have access to capacity building/learning programs which will help them to have access to a diverse working environment and contribute towards community and nation building.

We wish and request for national partnership.

Paul Lengar, Programme Coordinator, ISSL Council
