Councillor Christiana Valcassel received the Lambeth Civic Award 2011 during an extra-ordinary presentation ceremony in the Council Chamber of the Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton Hill, South West London.

Before she was honoured with the staff of office in front of a jam-packed hall, Councillor Steve Reed who moved the adoption of the motion, described Valcassel as a honourable and dedicated woman who is very well committed to the affairs of women and children especially within the Lambeth Borough.

Councillor Reed said that the honour meant so much for Valcassel particularly because she was becoming Mayor at the same year her country was celebrating her 50 years of Independence from British colonial rule.

In her maiden speech, Mayor Valcassel thanked her predecessor for his good works in the council and paid special tribute to Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Edward Mohamed Turay who graced the occasion together with his deputy Tamba Mansa Ngegba, Head of Chancery Florence Bangali, and Information Attaché Sorie Sudan Sesay.

“This is a major development not only for Valcassel but also for the people of Sierra Leone,” said the High Commissioner who described Valcassel’s achievement as an outstanding and remarkable one.

“Valcassel’s appointment clearly demonstrates the fact that we have distinguished Sierra Leoneans who are capable of holding sensitive and important positions,” said Deputy High Commissioner.

Head of Chancery said the new Mayor’s appointment will go a long way to re-brand the image of Sierra Leone in such a strategic country like the United Kingdom.

The newly appointed Mayor said her priority in her new capacity will be promoting a wide range of cultural activities and will work with charitable organisations to a make a huge difference on the lives of vulnerable members of the society.

The programme was climaxed by dancing and singing as Sierra Leoneans threw tremendous support to the achievement of a great daughter of that West African nation.
