APC and SLPP lose 26 to NDA
Reports reaching this paper indicate that approximately twenty six persons from both the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) and the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) have left their parties and joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Giving their reason for their action, a member of the group said they believe in the ideals of the NDA, which he said seeks the welfare of the people of this country without any form of segregation.
Formally declaring their allegiance to the party on Saturday, March 19 this year, the twenty six newcomers thronged the NDA headquarters at Duke Street, in Freetown.
They include:
Mr. Abdulai Barrie, Alhaji Ibrahim Barrie, from Tagrin Lungi, Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom; Mr. Arnold M. King, Mr. Amadu Wurie Bah, Mr. Alusine S. Jah, Mr. Ibrahim Kamara, Miss Kadiatu Njai, Mr. Chernor Bah, all from Constituency 94 in the Tombo Community, Western Rural District; Reverend Gbondo from Constituency 102, Kissy, former United National Democratic Party (UNPP) Parliamentary candidate, Dr. Yaya Saccoh from Njala, Southern Sierra Leone, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Marrah from Koinadugu, Northern Sierra Leone, Mr. Chernor Bah from Allen town, Greater Freetown, Mr. Amadu I. Kamara, Mr. Mohamed Yollah Bangura, and Mrs. Mabinty Conteh, all from Kambia, Northern Sierra Leone; Mrs. Mary Massaquoi, Miss Jeneba Kallon, from Pujehun, Southern Sierra Leone; Mr. Augustine Kamgbehsoh, Mammy Koroma, Mr. Ansu Kaikai, and Reverend Kogba, all from Shenge, Southern Sierra Leone; Mr. Gibrilla Kargbo, Mis Amyl Greene, Mr. Samuel Kargbo, all from Regent village, Western Rural District; and Mrs. Edith Williams from Kossoh town.
The reception ceremony was chaired by the party’s National Women’s Leader, Mrs. Isata Harding who stated that she highly appreciated the fact that her party has of late attracted a good number of personalities who have reasoned to join them to enhance their victory in the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.
She said they have a special place for women in the party and called on the women to give off their best in the furtherance of the work of the party.
In his statement, the party’s Secretary General, Mr. Mohamed S. Jalloh, said the party has a youthful threshold comprising of vulnerable as well as marginalized people especially women who are mostly perceived as the weaker sex.
He said as a political party the depict existence despite the fact that other political parties that came into existence have faded away. He maintained that in existence there is hope and that is what keeps them going.
He pointed out that they have the answers to the many unfulfilled promises the SLPP and the APC have not been able to grapple with for fifty years.
He said that even though this country has all the precious minerals to make it one can imagine. He stated that this is the doing of the so called traditional parties, the APC and the SLPP.
He stated that even though we keep blaming the colonialists of exploitation yet they were at least able to foster a sound socio-economic and cultural atmosphere whose legacy the country is enjoying is currently enjoying from.
He assured Sierra Leoneans that when they take over the mantle of leadership in this country, they shall endeavour to meet the demands and aspirations of all Sierra Leoneans.
“NDA is recognized with the cliché: ‘nor tension.’ That is not because we have been overtaken by cowardice, but for our genuineness towards peace building which is the bedrock for positive change. Without peace and a friendly atmosphere, development will only remain an illusionary thing,” he maintained.
In his comments, one of the new members, who is also human rights activist, Mr. Kaikai Alex, stated that he admired the ideology of the NDA. which was why he was joining the party and called on like minded Sierra Leoneans to join them.
Another newcomer, Mr. Yolla Bangura, said it was like the APC and the SLPP were footballers passing the ball from one to the other, stressing that it was high time this stopped with the NDA taking over the ball now.
In his statement, a representative from the African Peoples Socialist Movement (APSM), Mr. Chernor Alpha Bah revealed that mechanisms are now being put in place for his movement and like minded organizations to join forces with the NDA for them to take power at the 2012 elections.
