Revealed – fuel to go to Le26,000
Desks of Sierra Express Media seemed wary over disclosures that the price of fuel may increase to Le26,000 per gallon.
It is revealed though that the dealers have had deliberations with stakeholders of government on the issue on the price of fuel increase. Sources say dealers suffer payment of Le1,500 as tax per gallon of fuel.
Unconfirmed revelations articulate dealers’ fervent and unbending stance to have the price of fuel increased from Le17,500 to Le26,000.
That government, a number of times, has held meetings with dealers and members of Petroleum Unit (PU) to discuss price increase demands.
Facts have it that government has pleaded with the dealers to withhold the proposed price increase until after April 27th, a day Sierra Leoneans wait to celebrate their country’s 50th birthday worldwide.
As at year ending 2007, the price of fuel was below Le 13,000.
Between and after 2008 to 2011, it sky rocketed to Le17,500; giving a speculative increment of 8%.
Government avoids saying that the accelerating fuel price is a global phenomenon and must not be used as a gate way to poison minds of the electorates.
It is a fact that from 2008 to 2011, fuel price has been increased twice nay what is now Le17,500 as pump price.
Public opinions indicates that dealers unbending stance to increase the price of fuel from Le17,500 to Le 26,000 seemed awful and may lead to serious climb in the price of market items.
Be it known that at the increase of the price of fuel, business people, at all instances increase the prices of their goods.
Facts have it blatant that local food stuffs; rice, cassava, potatoes and other items apparently become expensive and are sold at high prices.
As at press time, it is told that market conditions have been hostile owing to the serialized hike of the price of food items.
It is recounted that constraints faced in the transportation of food items from the rural areas to Freetown urban are factors leading to price increase.
That the more money traders spend on transportation the more likely their goods are sold at high prices.
“We spend 50% on transportation each time we venture into villages to buy food items,” Amadu who trades at Guard Street said.
“And we expect our money after sales.”
Dealers are reportedly disgruntled over government’s delay in the enforcement of the ‘wished-for’ price increase and have vowed to have it endorsed.
It is speculated that the planned fuel increase may fire up prices of food and other items in the Sierra Leone markets.
A dealer who spoke on the grounds of secrecy admits there is to be an increase in the price of fuel, but refused to comment on the figure.
