South Africa May host U-20
South Africa are ready to take over from Libya in hosting the 2011 African Youth Championship this month, SAFA chairman Kirsten Nematandani has said.
“In any case, the World Cup 2010 has left a massive legacy in terms of infrastructure and it was a question of agreeing to host or not. We discussed the issue of the cost factor involved in hosting the event and also we sought assurance from CAF that we did not have to go into bidding with anyone to host the event, Nematandani noted.
It is now up to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to agree for the tournament to be hosted in South Africa that will see Ghana U20 team the Black Satellites as defending champions.
If all goes well and CAF confirms South Africa as the competition’s hosts, they will automatically replace Libya in Group A, along with Egypt, Lesotho and Mali.
The Chairman of the Federation Algerian Football, Mohamed Raouraoua, has also not ruled out his country Algeria in organizing the African Cup of Nations U-20 CAN 2011 in case of last minute withdrawal of Libya faces a serious security crisis.
However, South Africa remains the number one candidate to replace Libya as the atmosphere in Algeria is also far from stable.
