Chinese Envoy pledges more support for Sierra Leone

Speaking during a courtesy call on Dr. Soccoh Kabia at his Youyi building office, Ambassador Weilin intimated that this year marks the 40th anniversary of Sierra Leone/China diplomatic relations. He informed the minister about their intention to use this period as an opportunity to further strengthen the bond of friendship existing between the two countries.

He acknowledged that the Ministry of Fisheries has been very much instrumental in ensuring that an enabling environment is provided for Chinese companies to operate in the country and promised to help Sierra Leone pursue its development agenda.

He congratulated the minister on his new appointment and hoped the cordial bilateral relations existing between the countries would continue. He urged the minister to ensure that his ministry develop a proposal that would prompt their timely intervention.

Responding, Dr. Kabia said China’s tremendous progress has always been a great source inspiration for Sierra Leone and thanked the Chinese government for what he referred to as their “Friendly and Unconditional Support”

He informed the envoy about steps his ministry has taken to streamline the fisheries sector, including the provision of fish landing sites and appealed for help to enable it attain its goals.

He appreciated the role China had played in the surveillance, monitoring and control of the country’s territorial waters and they will provide more boats to make the process effective. He disclosed plans to develop the country’s semi industrial fisheries sector. Dr. Kabia emphasised the need to construct fishing harbours and roads leading to the country’s main fishing communities to enhance fish production, distribution and reduce post-harvest losses.

Meanwhile, the Director of JIUJIANG International Investment Limited, Zou De Lin has informed the Fisheries Minister about his intention to invest in the country’s fishing industry.  Mr. Zou De Lin who said his company has subsidiaries in Guinea, Ivory Coast and Congo also promised to help in providing Jetties, Cold rooms and the development of the country’s Marine Training Institute.

Fisheries and Marine minister, Dr. Kabia thanked the investor for identifying Sierra Leone as one of his areas of investment and hoped they will complement government’s effort in promoting the sector.
