Those lucky youths of Kailahun district
This column carried a piece on the generosity of the leadership of the ruling ALL Peoples Congress APC party. In the piece I made reference to the 25 million Leones donated to the youth of Kailahun district during his Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma’s recent visit to Kenema. I have been reliably informed by an insider of the red sun in the Pujehun district that the youth there were not left in the cold but that they also received their share from the boss. I also recalled on how the then Resident Minister South had distributed cash to some young people in Daru town during another Presidential tour of Kailahun district. In addition to Minister Musa Tarawali’s (who by the way is now at Internal Affairs) donation of motor cycles, the same minister was even more generous on his motor cycle distribution tour. The same honourable minister of internal affairs is reported to have promised more cash in future if the young people would only…… this time the young people of Pendembu were also beneficiaries.
One need not strain one’s grey cells to imagine how much the young people of Kissi Tongi would receive were his Excellency himself to visit them after formally opening the Luawa Hotel Resort in Kailahun town now that dates have been announced for the Local government election in Upper Bambara and the Parliamentary bye election in Kissi Tongi chiefdom which constitutes Parliamentary constituency 04. This is the seat vacated by the pro APC former SLPP Member of Parliament who was poached in broad daylight by the ruling party and appointed deputy minister of health and sanitation. All said and done the APC is a very wealthy and very generous party but that notwithstanding I have to remind its leadership that what those young people need is sustainable employment which would assure them of a regular income.
In the meantime the young men of that district see no harm in getting a share of what properly belongs to all of us including them. They must feel confident that more is on the way before it is over.
There is some talk in some circles that the IMF has been asked by our government to field a mission to Sierra Leone to see how that world financial body could help us get out of the economic which is our own making. I have refused to believe the story because according to the government propagandists everything is on track and that even before the lean months of July to October our inflation rate would have dropped to a single digit. And it will all happen because Sheik Sesey, Mohamed one Drop Sankoh and others keep drumming in our ears that anything Ernest touches turns into instant gold.
If we were having trouble with the economy why is the ruling party on a spending spree like buying the youth of Kailahun district? Not long ago when I suggested that we had hit stagflation, the world renowned economist at Peep newspaper Olu Ritchie Gordon ridiculed me by reminding his readers that without inflation there would be no development and that this development oriented government was on track, Sam Bangura or no Sam Bangura. Ha, ha.
